Trolltunga

The length of this walk is decided in a car park, before you start.

The rock tongue sits roughly 700 m above Ringedalsvatnet. Reaching it is a long day by any measure, but the difference between the two usual start points is about seven kilometres and four hundred metres of climbing, in each direction.

P2 and P3

Skjeggedal (P2) is the lower car park and the classic start. Mågelitopp (P3) sits above the steepest initial climb, reached by a narrow seasonal toll road with a limited number of spaces. When P3 is open and you have a space, the walk becomes a long but ordinary hill day. When it is not, it is a very long one, and people who planned for the short version and got the long one make up a noticeable share of the incidents here.

Turnaround times

Posted turnaround times along the route are not advisory decoration. A significant share of rescues here involve people who reached the tongue late, in deteriorating weather, with four to five hours still ahead of them and no head torch. This is a good route to be carrying something that works without mobile coverage, and a better one to simply turn round on time.

The queue

In season there is a line for the photograph, often an hour or more. Budget for it or accept that you will not stand on the tongue itself. The view from the rocks above it is arguably better and entirely free of queueing.

Carrying for it

Twelve hours is a different packing problem from four. Water is the item people underestimate; there is running water along the route but it is not evenly spaced. See loading a pack for a long day.
