Kjeragbolten

Three steep climbs, three descents, and a rock you do not have to stand on.

Kjerag is frequently booked as a companion to Preikestolen because they share a fjord. They do not share a difficulty. Kjerag climbs and descends three separate steep sections in each direction, on slabby rock with chains fixed where the angle demands it, and the cumulative ascent is roughly double.

The three climbs

The profile is the defining feature. You gain height, lose most of it, gain it again, and repeat. It means the return journey is not the easy half, and it means turning back partway does not save you as much effort as you would expect.

The boulder

Kjeragbolten is a rock wedged in a crevasse with a substantial drop beneath it. Stepping onto it is entirely optional and involves no technical difficulty whatsoever, which is exactly why it is dangerous: the step is trivial and the consequence of a slip is not. Wet or icy rock changes the calculation completely.

Weather on the plateau

The plateau is high, exposed and frequently in cloud when the fjord below is clear. Slab rock in the wet is unpleasant on the chained sections. Check a mountain forecast rather than a town forecast and be willing to write the day off.

Access

The road up to the car park is seasonal and closes with snow. Outside the season this becomes a serious winter route rather than a long walk.
