There are enough gear reviews. What there is less of is an explanation of the mechanism, which is the part that lets you decide for yourself whether a specification matters. These pages are written that way, and none of them recommends a product.

Rain shells
Most shell failures are not leaks. They are the membrane doing exactly what it was designed to do, badly.
Boots for wet ground

Layering
Three layers, one job each. The failure mode is almost always moisture you produced yourself.

A well-loaded pack is carried by your legs. A badly loaded one is carried by your shoulders.
