DNT cabins

A network of huts run largely on trust, in three quite different varieties.

Den Norske Turistforening, the Norwegian Trekking Association, maintains a large network of cabins and marked routes. The red painted T you see on rock across the country is theirs, and it is the reason it appears on this site as a mark.

Three kinds of cabin

• Betjent (staffed). Someone is there, meals are served, beds are made up. Closest to a mountain hotel, busiest, and normally requiring booking in season.
• Selvbetjent (self-service). No staff, but a stocked food store with tinned and dried goods, bedding, and a kitchen. You cook, you clean, and you record what you took and pay for it. The stock is carried in, which is why prices reflect that.
• Ubetjent (unstaffed). Shelter, beds and a stove. No food at all. You carry everything and you pay for the night the same way.

The key

Locked cabins use a standard DNT key, obtained in advance against a deposit. Turning up at an unstaffed cabin in weather without one is a genuinely bad evening, and it is a mistake that visitors make far more often than Norwegians do.

Paying

Self-service and unstaffed cabins run on trust: you complete a form or use the app, and you settle for the bed and whatever you took from the store. Members pay noticeably less, and if you are staying more than about two nights in a season the membership pays for itself.

The etiquette

Nobody is turned away. If a cabin is full, people make room on the floor, which means arriving late and finding a mattress rather than a bed is normal and not a grievance. Leave the cabin as you would want to find it: dry wood in, dishes done, door properly closed against the weather.

Waymarking

Summer routes are marked with the red T on rock and with cairns above the tree line. Some winter routes are marked with birch branches set in the snow, which are moved seasonally and are not a permanent feature. A marked route is not the same as a maintained path, and in poor visibility the gap between cairns can be longer than you can see. See navigation kit.
