Romsdalseggen

A traverse rather than a summit, and the transport runs one way only.

Romsdalseggen is walked eastwards, from Venjesdalen towards Andalsnes, which means the seasonal shuttle bus is not an optional convenience. It is the route. Miss it and there is no sensible way to start.

What you are looking at

The ridge runs above the Romsdal valley with Romsdalshorn on one side and the Trollveggen face further up the valley. On a clear day this is the most consistently interesting outlook of the routes on this site, because you move along it rather than arriving at a single viewpoint.

Exposure

There are short sections where the ground falls away on both sides, and a handful of places with chains. None of it is technical, but it is a poor route for anyone who dislikes edges. An easier variant bypasses the narrowest part, and taking it is not a defeat.

Finishing

The descent into Andalsnes is long and steep and takes far more out of most people than the ridge does. Plan the day around it rather than treating it as the bit after the walk. Sound boot fit matters here specifically: a thousand metres of descent is where badly sized boots cost you toenails.

Compared with Besseggen

Besseggen is longer and higher but the ground underfoot is gentler. Romsdalseggen is shorter with more sustained exposure. People who found Besseggen comfortable do not automatically find this one comfortable.
